Land Defenders and Water Protectors

Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples’ Land Defenders and Water Protectors supports Native led actions against incursions, unwanted development, and extractive industries as well as threats to sacred sites in Indigenous communities, lands and territories. Land Defenders and Water Protectors grants will be available for Indigenous Peoples’ community based organizations doing frontline advocacy and peaceful direct actions responding to the desecration of Mother Earth.

Organizations that wish to apply must adhere to the following:
  • Be a non-profit organization with 501(3)(c) tax-exemption status. OR partner with a non-profit that can provide a 501(3)(c) tax-exemption status that can serve as your fiscal sponsor (as to allocate funds). Community-based projects that do not have non-profit status are welcome to contact SGF regarding Affiliate Program/Fiscal Administration for consideration to our Affiliate Program. 
  • Engagement, Leadership & Decision-making –80% or more Indigenous Board of Directors, and an Indigenous Executive Director. 
  • Emerge directly from the community and are led by the Indigenous Peoples impacted by the project.
  • Be in good standing with Seventh Generation Fund.
