Sounds From the Movement with Calina Lawrence
Today on Native Pulse, we highlight Sounds from the Movement with Suquamish artist, Calina Lawrence. Calina shares three songs with us, and discusses the vital role art has played in her life as a vocalist, creator, and movement-builder.
From the Suquamish Nation and Salish Territory, Calina Lawrence is an Indigenous vocalist, aspiring emcee and producer. Her debut album EPICENTER was self-released in August, 2018. While depicting inter-generational trauma in her Hip Hop-Salish fusion works, she equally draws from examples of her people’s resiliency. Lawrence co-wrote and produced the single “ʔəshəliʔ ti txʷəlšucid” one translation being “Lushootseed Is Alive,” a song representative of how the young artist is using music in pursuit of liberation.
